Freedom is the only worthy goal in life. It is won by disregarding things that lie beyond our control.
As a former slave, Epictetus knew that freedom is not a matter of chains. He taught that the truly free person is one who does not depend on wealth, reputation, or approval to feel whole. When asked how he could be happy with so little, he laughed: 'Because I want nothing more.' To him, freedom meant mastering desires and expectations — and anchoring happiness to character, not circumstance.
True freedom is internal. You gain it by letting go of external attachments.
"Attachment is the origin, the root of suffering; hence it is the cause of suffering."
