It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows.
Epictetus taught that arrogance is the enemy of growth. He noticed how some students came not to learn, but to appear wise. They clung to their opinions like armour. But Epictetus would disarm them with questions — showing how much they had assumed, how little they had examined. He believed the first step to wisdom was unlearning pride. A mind closed to change is a mind closed to truth.
To grow, start by saying: 'I might be wrong.'
